Cat litter is designed to be porous and absorbant which usually makes it pretty light, relatively speaking. While potting soil and anything with peat moss mixed in will be porous as well, dirt and sand aren’t. WebbOrganic-rich, well-draining potting soil is the best potting soil for spider plants. Perlite, vermiculite, coconut coir, or sand can be added to a general-purpose potting mix to improve aeration and drainage. It is critical to include sphagnum peat moss, worm casting, or compost to increase the nutritional value.

Moreover, perlite might not even be that good either as, over time, it tends to be pushed up (it floats in water) by the clay until it floats on the top.
